Older LS-DOS/LDOS/BASIC manuals

Most of these manuals are not of much interest anymore, as most people are probably running LDOS 5.3.1 or LS-DOS 6.3.1. However, there were no official releases of 5.3.x or 6.3.x for the Max-80, so the 5.1.3 manual is still the most accurate for that system. Also, the manuals that have been OCR'ed and reformatted are easier to search than the newest manuals, which are just images.

All of the manuals are listed from oldest to newest.

LDOS, Model I/III

1. LDOS 5.1.x Manual (2nd Edition, Model III, OCR'ed): Text / PDF / Word 97
   The 2nd Edition manual for Model III LDOS version 5.1.x. This manual was scanned, OCR'ed, and reformatted in MS Word by Pete Cervasio, so it is searchable and it looks great. Most of the information in this manual applies to both Model I and Model III, but Model I specific information is not included. See below for some information on the differences between Model I and III.

2. LDOS 5.1.x Manual (3rd Edition, Model I, scan only): DjVu (4.2 MB)
   The 3rd Edition manual for Model I LDOS 5.1.x. This manual is scanned at 300 dpi, but is not OCRed, so it is a much larger download (6.7 MB) and is not searchable.

3. LDOS 5.1.x Manual (Radio Shack Edition, Model I/III, scan only): DjVu (5.3 MB)
   The Radio Shack edition manual for Model I/III LDOS 5.1.3R, the first version of LDOS that Radio Shack licensed as their hard disk operating system. This edition combines Model I and III information, but leaves out a few things Radio Shack didn't want in there, such as LX-80 information. This manual is scanned at 300 dpi and not OCRed. It weighs in at 7.7 MB.

4. LDOS 5.3.1 Manual update (from 5.1.x): Text / PDF / Word 97
   The update booklet documenting the changes between 5.1 and 5.3.1, scanned, OCR'ed, and reformatted. This booklet covers both Model I and Model III.

5. LDOS 5.3.0 to 5.3.1 manual update: Text / PDF / Word 97
   Update pages highlighting the changes between 5.3.0 and 5.3.1, scanned, OCR'ed, and reformatted. The pages cover both Model I and Model III. Note that the previous item subsumes this one, but I've supplied both anyway.

6. LDOS & LS-DOS Reference Manual M-40-060 (1992): PDF
   A combined manual set from Misosys, dated 1992, for both LS-DOS 6.3.1 and LDOS 5.3.1.

Here are some differences between Model I and Model III LDOS, for those who would prefer to download only the searchable Model III manual but need Model I information too:

• Model I LDOS included the FDUBL/CMD driver for double density support on machines with double density adaptors, and SOLE/CMD to support making bootable double density disks. See the online help.

• A few system files are differently named, such as MOD1/DCT vs. MOD3/DCT (floppy drivers) and RS232R/DVR vs. RS232T/DVR (serial port drivers).

• Model I LDOS has different RAM addresses for a few system functions and memory areas available to programmers. A summary of both Model I and Model III addresses follows. This data was scanned in from a paper copy of the LDOS Quarterly, volume 2 number 1, so it reflects LDOS version 5.1.3.

• The LDOS way of checking for Model I vs. III is to test whether the byte at (125H) is 'I'; if so, it's a Model III. The 'I' is part of the ROM's "Model III Basic" signon message.
